Sykes Hot Springs is the only natural backcountry hot spring in Big Sur. Unfortunately, the 2017 Soberanes Fire damaged the 18.9-mile Pine Ridge Trail that reaches it. Luckily, the Los Padres National Forest is working hard to restore the burned area and new trail openings should be announced in 2021 (estimated opening was sometime in 2020, however).

Prior to the wildfire/winter storm closure, Sykes Camp was overused by visitors due to the presence of natural hot springs that were impounded into tubs. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will no longer tolerate human-made structures and impoundments. Sadly, scofflaws will rebuild impoundments.

On any given weekend, dozens (if not hundreds) of people are out on this trail with Sykes as their destination. The official Sykes Hot Springs camp is across the river and to the right. We were told the best sights were to the immediate left hiking down stream toward the hot springs. We chose left and found several prime spots…already occupied.
